This project proposal began following a series of site visits and staff interviews at the Manhattan branch of the French Institute / Alliance Francaise (FI:AF). Space being a much sought after commodity in Manhattan, the physical space of the library is somewhat oddly constructed. As it’s not exactly small, but rather compartmentalized, I thought the addition of some more digital corner would fit in well and perhaps attract a more diverse audience. So I began designing a digital space for use by their patron population, including teaching staff, students, and members of the FI:AF. The project’s audience is specific but I hope its parameters reflect an accurate and empathetic view of its potential users. This proposal is partly a reflection on the pedagogical role of libraries and party a consideration of the evolution of user needs.
